DEVO OF THE WEEK
A Gift from God
It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives sleep to his beloved.
Psalm 127:2 (NRSV)
I hate sleep. I like getting up early and going to bed late; I never take naps. I think about all the things I could get done if I weren’t forced to slow down and check out for eight (or so) hours each night. You probably disagree with me -- most people love sleep. Come to think of it, no one has ever agreed with my “no sleep” wish.
I also hate being tired, and that’s the catch: I have to give in to the beast called “sleep.” I wish I had a say in the matter, but that’s not how it works. God created my body to require sleep, and there’s nothing I can do about it. So instead of complaining about being a slave to sleep, perhaps I should recognize sleep for what it truly is -- a gift from God. Sleep is a break from everything, a time to slow down, recharge, and prepare for the next day. The value of this gift is never more obvious than when I get to stretch out in my bed and spend some quality time with my pillow after a long week of little sleep. <
