DEVO OF THE WEEK

WRITING PRAYERS

I will pour out my thoughts to you;
I will make my words known to you.

Proverbs 1:23b (NRSV)

I sit in front of an empty page and wonder how to fill it. Where does inspiration come from anyway?
     A summer breeze blows through the window, humid and fragrant. Branches wave green outside my window. These smells, colors, and impressions unleash in me a passion that is birthed out of appreciation for God’s creation. God’s gift of life is so full! Memories, emotions, and beliefs overflow and spill out in words. They make poetry, a song sometimes of praise and sometimes of suffering, a prayer that rises back to God. I write about God, love, friendship, death -- all that my Creator gives.
     I create because that’s who I am. I am made in God’s image and have been given this world to try to understand, to paint in words, and to give back to God. <

Want to talk more about "creating prayer"?

Write When God Seems Far Away

Once when my prayers seemed to be hitting a wall, I grabbed some paper and wrote the word God. At first I wrote small; then I kept writing “God” over and over, bigger and bigger, until other words flowed -- words that spoke of the distance I felt between God and me. Finally I sensed that my connection with God had been renewed. Something about writing, with pen and paper, frees the spirit and helps us to connect with God. When God seems distant, take courage, grab a pen, and write.
