Alone with God

By Grover Carlton Emmons

Alone with God is a collection of prayers for each day of the year written by the founding editor of The Upper Room daily devotional guide. The short prayers were composed over a long period and used mainly in Emmons' personal devotions. After his death, the prayers of adoration, confession, thanksgiving and supplication were compiled and published in this small anthology.

Note: Inclusive language was not part of the social concerns during the 1940s when Emmons wrote. However the central message of these prayers is inclusive and speaks clearly to today's social consciousness.

By Ratha Doyle McGee

"Most of us have trouble with our daily devotions ... the first reason is our thoughts do not move readily from everyday matters to the verities of God. Our minds need trains of thought to transport them to the islands of worship; signpost to show us the way." - Ratha Doyle McGee

If you've ever wondered about the meaning of the fluer-de-lis, rose or shamrock found carved in Christian churches, wonder no more. Rather than popular culture notions stemming from The DaVinci Code, these are not encoded mysterious messages but visual tools to enhance meditation.

When origins are discovered and the representations of faith are used properly, great symbols provide direction and content pointing toward greater devotion.

This classic illustrated book explores Christian symbols and their relationship to the Bible in terms of ...

  • metaphors
  • signs prompted by an event and used in the early life of the church
  • appropriate expressions of biblical ideas

There is a special chapter on symbolism found within The Upper Room Chapel.

The focal point of The Upper Room Chapel, which is visited by more than 25,000 guests each year, is a woodcarving (sculpted by Ernest Pellegrini) of Leonardo da Vinci's painting The Last Supper. The pulpit in the chapel, with its winding stair and canopy, was contructed with features of several significant pulpits from around the world.
