Spirituality of Simplicity

November 30th, 2006

Thursday’s Reflection

WHEN WE BEGIN TO LIVE a spirituality of simplicity, our primary concern ceases to be success and becomes faithfulness. We are called to live with integrity, to express the truth as we perceive it, and to trust in God’s ability to use what we offer.

The Shalom Bringers

November 29th, 2006

Wednesday’s Reflection

THE SHALOM BRINGERS spread a sense of warmth, comfort, hope, and well-being even before a word is spoken. … When we think of these men and women in our lives, we feel as if God is reaching out to us through them. We know that if God is like them — only much more so — then the universe is in safe hands. The glory of God shines through their faces and touches us through their hands. We call them the children of God.

Trusting the Invitation

November 28th, 2006

Tuesday’s Reflection

ONE IMPORTANT way in which we exercise trust is by stepping out in courage. To take that first step in following our dream is an act of trust. Trust is not necessarily a state of passivity, but often one of expectant readiness. …

The particular path you are walking has never been walked before. You are pioneering it, with Jesus as your “scout.” …

Lord, I don’t know where we are going, but I trust your invitation to “come and see.” Give me the courage to invest everything I have and everything I am in the great adventure of life in you. Amen.

The Active God

November 27th, 2006

Monday’s Reflection

GOD IS ACTIVE in the world and in our lives in many ways. We may feel the mystery of God as we view storm clouds brewing over a blue ocean. We may experience the love of God when we are comforted by a friend. We may be filled with the compassion of God as we attend a conference on the plight of the homeless. We may be blessed by the peace of God during prayer or troubled by the challenges of God as we study the Bible. God comes to us in both our conscious and our unconscious experiences, for God is in all of life.

One Truly Holy Place

November 26th, 2006

Sunday’s Reflection

THE REVEALING of the Holy One is what we need to transform our lives. We need to know that the ground on which we are standing is holy ground. When we have found one truly holy place, then all places become holy.

I Belong to God

November 25th, 2006

Saturday’s Reflection

WE DO NOT PROJECT or generate grace. Nor do we initiate the redemptive order or process which, when we let it, sweeps into its course our scarred lives, our prayers, and our concerns for others. The redemptive process is already going on. I belong to God.

Everything Is God’s

November 24th, 2006

Friday’s Reflection

TAKE, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will — all that I have and call my own. You have given it all to me, Lord, I return it. Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace. This is enough for me.

Pause, Wait, and Listen

November 23rd, 2006

THANKSGIVING DAY

Thursday’s Reflection

WE MUST LISTEN for God day by day. We must keep an ear open to our neighbor, an ear to our hearts, and a third ear to God.

Faith is a journey led by God. We pause, wait, and listen for the Guide who speaks more often than not in a still, small voice that requires careful, patient attention.

Crust of Self

November 22nd, 2006

Wednesday’s Reflection

IF OUR VIEW OF OURSELVES is anything less than being a word spoken forth by God, then our self image is a self-constructed facade — a crust of self. …

I have come to realize that the primary work of God’s grace in our lives is to liberate us from this destructive bondage to the crust of self in order to shape us into wholeness. God is seeking to create in us a whole new structure of habits, attitudes, and perceptions, of dynamics of personal and corporate relationships, of patterns of reaction and response to the world. This new structure is one of increasing Christlikeness. God is seeking to break the crust.

Reality Beyond the Reality

November 21st, 2006

Tuesday’s Reflection

WE HAVE HOPE in what we don’t see,
we have faith in what we can’t hear,
and we keep looking and listening
for the reality beyond the reality.
