Where in the World Are You?
by Jacqueline Horsfall
Families around the world celebrate times together in many different
ways. See if you can match each tradition with the country it belongs
to. Each tradition has a clue that will help you match it. You may need
to check an encyclopedia or ask an adult for help.
- Family members meet at home each afternoon for siesta,a
time to relax and eat their main meal of the day.
- Families take leisurely evening walks during the long summer days
of White Nights, when the sun never sets.
- Big Ben keeps time as families watch "pantomime," a fairy-tale
comedy where girls and boys switch roles, and the audience joins in
the show.
- Mediterranean family members tap colored Easter eggs together in
a contest to see whose egg will last the longest without cracking.
- On Mother's Day, girls and boys present bouquets of flowers to
their maman.
- Boys and girls lead the Christmas posadas, with families
celebrating the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem.
- Alpine families gather around a sawdust circle to watch sons and
grandsons tug each other's baggy shorts in some friendly wrestling.
- On the first day of spring, families picnic, swim, or take boat
rides up the Nile.
- Native families teach young members the stories, dances, and dreams
of their ancestors in this land of the kangaroo.
- Families spend holidays walking on the Great Wall, exercising and
enjoying the beautiful scenery.
- Families wash and chop vegetables to make their special kimch'i,a
traditional dish of fermented cabbage and spices.
