Be Deliberate with Maintaining Your Peace

April 11, 2020 by Susan Olubunmi (British Columbia, Canada)

‘Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

— Colossians 3:15 (NIV)

I have found myself reflecting more on scriptures relating to peace given this COVID-19 situation. The above scripture suggests we take advantage of the peace that only God can give, and we have to be deliberate in applying this peace to our minds and thoughts continuously. The current state of COVID-19 pandemic has brought the whole world to an alarming state of anxiety, stress, and fear. Chaos and uncertainty rule as individuals, organizations, and governments grapple with the ongoing consequences of the virus. Amidst the uncertainties, worries, and fears, I have kept hope alive by focusing on the little things so often ignored in life.

This morning, I woke up to the sound of birds chirping joyously in my backyard.  Through the window, I observed a beautifully colored bird take its flight into the skies. The brilliant colors of red, brown, and yellow warmed my heart as the bird flapped its wings and disappeared from sight. COVID-19 has caused me to slow down and observe nature in a way my busy life has never permitted. The other day, I took a walk around my block. Flowers of all sizes and shapes greeted me as I walked past.  Their vibrant shades of blue, pink, yellow, and purple were a beauty to behold! The aromas thrilled my nose with a comforting smell of mint and freshness. I was suddenly reminded that the world has not come to an end.

If you have found yourself fighting worry and anxiety as a result of recent events, remember that God offers us peace. Focus on the little things in life that can make you happy or hopeful — taking a walk, observing the sunset, riding a bike, looking at the stars, listening to the birds, smelling the flowers, etc. With God's help, we can find moments each day to take our focus off the current situation, and be at peace! Every day presents enough blessings to give us a little bit of peace and joy. So come with me for a while, take your eyes off the bills, worries, sicknesses, diseases, uncertainties, and fears. Indulge in the blessings God has surrounded you with, be deliberate about maintaining your peace!

Prayer: Dear Lord, fill our hearts with your peace which surpasses all understanding. Give us the grace to focus on your blessings even in the middle of life's uncertainties. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
