More From Geo Pickell

February 8, 2022 by Geo Pickell (North Dakota, USA)

When I was in second grade, I wrote a short story about a wild dog.  My teacher gave me two gold stars and put the story in the school newsletter.  That experience did not lead me to aspire to be a great novelist, but a seed was planted then that God would begin to water one day.  In the meantime, I grew up, went to college, got married, took a job in healthcare, and lost the central vision in my right eye due to idiopathic hemorrhaging.  A few years later, my left eye suffered a retinal detachment.  It was during that time that I felt the urge to get back to writing.

God often asks us to do things that don’t make sense to us.  I couldn’t see to drive, yet now I had the urge to write?  But truly believing that God had called me to try, I experimented with my computer’s font size and discovered that I could see well enough to put a few thoughts down on paper.  It was during that time that I wrote the meditation, “Looking Closely.”

Thankful to have any sight at all, I still felt vulnerable.  I was on the worship team at church, but I couldn’t always see the music.  Faces were blurred, and if I didn’t recognize a voice, I didn’t always know who was talking to me.  Having limited vision was difficult—it humbled me and made me dependent on others.  It also made my heart softer for people who have physical limitations.

Since then, a skilled retina specialist, in concert with a remarkable eye surgeon, helped me regain some of my sight.  I can drive again (although not in high traffic), and I don’t need my font sizes quite so gigantic.  For a complete healing, I will need the Lord to touch me.  So in regard to my eyes, I have determined to be like the persistent widow in Luke 18:1-8, who badgered the king until she got what she needed.

Like everything else written in God’s word, that passage is there for encouragement and instruction.  And because Jesus is my Savior, I can seek him for my needs every day.  The author and finisher of my faith is the very One who has asked me to share my experiences with others in print.
