More From Jerry White

February 10, 2022 by Jerry White (Florida, USA)

The scripture focus in my place of worship this morning included Psalm 36:9 that says, “With you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light” (NIV). As I sat there with others who had braved the winter wind and rain and watched rays of light stream through stained glass windows, I was reminded of what a privilege it is to gather with others to worship in a beautiful building.

In the place I describe in my devotional (pictured above) a meeting like that would not have been possible. There are no church buildings. In that place, and in so many parts of the world, believers gather at great risk, in small groups, behind closed doors. They study scripture together and share their struggles and joys with each other. I have found that God’s light can shine even more brightly in those simple gatherings. Because of the darkness all around, there is a distinct light that shines in the eyes of those who know the truth. And when they leave, the worshipers take that light out into the dark streets of their towns. Day by day it spreads, one person at a time.

Whether we depart from a beautiful place of worship with hundreds of people, or whether we quietly slip away from a time of worship with two or three others, each believer leaves worship carrying God’s light into the world. I pray that today I will dust off the light that God has placed in my life and shine it brightly into the lives of those God brings across my path. People around me are seeking the hope and peace and comfort I have found.
