More From Elizabeth Erlandson

May 5, 2022 by Elizabeth Erlandson (Nebraska, USA)

My neighbor boys moved to another part of town, yet I’ve only had to shovel my walk one time in the past three years. Others have stepped up to help, and God has provided the means for us to hire a dependable snow removal service.

My husband’s health is an ongoing concern. In February, he had emergency bypass surgery on his right leg and was away from home for three weeks, first in the hospital and then in rehab. I needed to make room for his walker during that time, which meant finding a new home for our china cabinet and an oversized dresser.

I fretted for days about how to dispose of the furniture. I put an ad on our local digital marketplace website and mentioned the items to several friends. No one responded. Feeling defeated, I sat with my husband in his room at the rehab center and recited my list of woes. Just then, an elder from our church stopped by to visit. “How are you doing?” he asked me. I almost burst into tears as I explained the furniture problem.

He immediately took charge, assuring me not to worry. He would take care of everything. This dear man found two strong gentlemen from our church to haul the furniture to our garage and then arranged for a local non-profit to pick it up. Another friend offered to pack the dishes and glassware from the china cabinet. She carefully wrapped every item, put them in cartons, loaded the boxes into her car, and delivered them to a Christian thrift store that helps refugees and immigrants in our city.

When my husband returned home from the rehab facility, we had excellent follow-up care—nurses, physical therapists, and a home health aide assisted my husband through the transition back home.

I can’t think of any need that hasn’t been met, either by God’s people or through our greater community. Leaning on the Lord sounds easy, but it takes supernatural strength, of which God has an inexhaustible supply. I am so grateful I have had many opportunities to rely on God. God is faithful.

I pray that my experiences will encourage others to trust God too.
