The first time I heard “coincidence is God’s way of remaining anonymous” was from a co-worker many years ago. It has since become one of my favorite expressions. This is particularly true when it comes to reading Upper Room devotions.
Recently, I had a medical procedure scheduled, and on the day of the procedure The Upper Room published a devotion on overcoming fear. Clearly, these were the words I needed to hear, and reading them made me feel much more at ease. That day, however, was not the only day this happened: Feeling sick? A devotion on healing. Worried about finances? A devotion on God’s provision. While I know these devotions are read by millions of people, many days, it feels like the author is speaking directly to me. Is this pure coincidence? I think not.
While it may not be my plan or my timing, God seems to give me exactly what I need, precisely when I need it, if I just listen. I have heard people refer to God as an “on-time God.” I think it is wonderful that God places people in my path who help me hear his words. Sometimes these messages come when I least expect them but always when I very much need them.
