The care packages

Two causes that are close to my heart, and that I spend my time volunteering for, are in the areas of food insecurity and homelessness. That was the inspiration for my October 13, 2023, devotion in The Upper Room. I was reminded of Mathew 25:40, where Jesus said, “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me’” (NIV).

In my devotional, I told the story of providing a care package to someone in need of assistance. Yes, I still keep these care packages in my car! Someone asked me, “What’s in the care package?” I responded, “Food, water, socks, hygiene products, resources for getting help, and positive affirmations of self-love and God’s love.” It is my goal to leave people feeling better than when I found them. And while money is very important, sometimes a kind word and showing love through acts of service leave a lasting impression.

In our fast-paced world, it is easy to get caught up in everything that we must do for the day. We can overlook those around us who just need to be shown a little bit of compassion, understanding, and love.

Studies have shown that altruism—having concern for the well-being of others—and giving positively triggers the brain’s reward center. What does that mean? Helping others makes you feel better! And I believe God designed it that way on purpose. We are interconnected beings, meant to do goodwill in this world. And when we become disconnected from that mission, it affects our own feelings of satisfaction with life.

In this instance, my act of service was a care package. Yours may be calling others to pray with them, cooking a meal, offering someone a ride, or paying a bill. I guarantee that when you pray to God, God will reveal his will for you in your area of giving.

We may not be able to help everybody, but we all have the power to help somebody. And when we help others, we are truly showing the love of Christ. We are blessed to be a blessing!
