The Power of Community

I was blessed to coach over 80 kids as a Little League baseball coach. In today’s meditation, the Rangers learned a valuable lesson about never giving up, especially when it appears there are insurmountable challenges. We never know what God has in store for us, and we should pursue life with enthusiasm and hope.
A personal lesson I learned is that being present in our children’s lives is something that cannot be replaced. When my kids were young, I was present by attending all their events — whether it be baseball, swimming, rowing, cheering, gymnastics, a triathlon race, or dance. While material things are nice, a parent’s presence is priceless, as are the memories.
My children are young adults now — ages 23 and 21. Nowadays, I am present by being available when they need my assistance. Both my children know I will stop everything to help them any time they call or text. My son recently purchased a condo in another state, and I travel as often as possible to assist him with the renovations. Next month I will help my daughter move out of her on-campus housing.
Sports are still relevant in my life and a great connection point with my son. On Mother’s Day, he and I will participate in our 11th triathlon together. I often joke with friends that while other dads were throwing a ball with their son, I was practicing triathlon transitions (swim-to-bike and bike-to-run) with my son.
My greatest joy in life is watching my kids do anything. And although I now watch from a distance, I still feel this way. I continue to pray for them daily and look forward to creating more memories as I cherish every second with them.
