Giving and Receiving

July 10, 2026 by Jacie Conley (Oklahoma, USA)

Since I wrote the devotion “Are You a Comforter,” I have learned about the struggles that life can bring you. At times, you are the one being a comforter and offering help to others. Other times, you are the one receiving comfort and help.

I often find myself in situations where I am helping people. I genuinely enjoy helping others and always feel led to do so when I am able. When I had three surgeries in a short period of time, recovery really slowed me down. There wasn’t much I could do on my own for a while. As someone who is always busy, this was hard for me to handle. I had to rely on others for help, encouragement and support. I would much rather be the one helping, but it was during this time that I learned an important lesson: there will be times in life when we need others. Sometimes we must allow others to be comforters and helpers to us.

As my family and friends checked in on me, prayed for me, and offered help, I experienced firsthand the kindness of others. When you experience the kindness of others, it teaches you the importance of being a comforter and helping those in need.

God uses us when we are strong enough to help others and also when we are the ones receiving help. I’m thankful that God uses both of these experiences to teach us valuable lessons. Whether you are currently giving help or receiving it, remember God has a purpose for us. The comfort we receive today might be the comfort we are giving tomorrow.
