More From Melinda Lazor

February 21, 2019 by Melinda Lazor (Connecticut)

On January 27, 2019, our family remembered the fourth year since the passing of Steve in 2015.  We shared memories (like the time he insisted on buying a 14-foot Christmas tree for our living room that had an 18-foot ceiling, and we had to pull the tree up our long driveway on a sled due to the snow) and a few tears.  We miss him still, but my faith in God has deepened through grief, as God has been with me each step.  I think of the beatitude, "Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted."

My faith journey is leading me to new joys and experiences that, while they can never replace the loving relationship I had with Steve, are helping me grow as a person and are giving me fulfillment.  I volunteer at a local nursing home, and I have trained many hours to become a lay minister in my church through the Stephen Ministry program.  I am currently using my caregiving skills to support a grieving woman who lost her husband two years ago.  I have a wonderful, supportive group of women that I join weekly for prayer and Bible study.  I am also trying new sports like Tai Chi.

I begin each day with God and The Upper Room, and I know that God will be with me as my strength and shield whenever I am anxious or fearful about the challenges of aging and living alone.
