It’s been almost five years since I received the devastating news that changed my life forever—the news of my husband’s affair. God truly brought new life out of the ashes. My husband and I went through ups and a lot of downs during our journey toward healing. Each time my mind wandered toward divorce, the Lord gave me an uneasiness in my spirit that seemed to say, “Give it more time.” I’m so glad I listened to that impression on my heart. Our marriage is now better than before; our communication and openness have reached new levels, and our marriage is truly grounded in Christ.

My husband and I learned the importance of investing in our relationship and our marriage. We attend the marriage classes that our church offers, we go to a small group together, and we have devotional time together each morning. Now my husband initiates doing these things, where before he complained and went reluctantly or not at all

God’s word states multiple times that we will have trouble, but the enemy does not get the last word:

“In this you rejoice, even if now for a little while you have had to suffer various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith—being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed” (1 Peter 1:6-7, NRSV).

Joseph said to his brothers who left him to die: “Even though you intended to do harm to me, God intended it for good” (Genesis 50:20). This verse reminds me that even though God’s enemy intended to harm me and my husband, God used that situation for good.

Regardless of the sorrow we may have to endure, we can praise God for the life changes and the growth God brings us through our experiences.

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds — Psalm 9:1
