They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper. - Psalm 1:3 (NRSVUE)
In the forest where I live, there are two primary types of trees: birches and evergreens. Birch trees turn golden yellow in autumn and then lose their leaves, carpeting the forest floor in vibrant yellow. The white trunks of the birches stand bare in the snowy winters here. It is not until springtime that little leaves begin to re-emerge — “mouse ears” as we call them — peeking out with the first breaths of spring.
Evergreens, on the other hand, remain unchanged by the seasons. Their foliage is always green. Pine and spruce trees make a beautiful contrast to the snow in winter. They are strong and stable, remaining green even as snow piles up on them.
Birches remind me of our life circumstances because they do not remain the same. In our lives, we experience many changes. Our jobs change, relationships take on new patterns, and health fluctuates. Some things, however, do not change. Evergreens turn my thoughts to God. Scripture tells us that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Heb. 13:8). His great love for us does not change.
Amid the busyness of life, I can pause and reflect that “his steadfast love endures forever” (Ps. 136:1). I find great solace in knowing that we can rely on our unchanging Savior.
