Mark 8:14-21

Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? - Mark 8:18 (NIV)

I had been retired for fourteen years, and everything was going well until I suffered a stroke. I thank God that my life was spared and that I still have use of my right side, though it has been weakened. I made great progress in rehabilitation, but two weeks after arriving home I developed shingles. A few months after that I ended up in the emergency room with gallstone issues. Despite my continual prayers, these setbacks discouraged me.

However, one morning I reflected on all that God had done for me in the past. I began thanking God for these things, and my faith grew.

In today’s scripture, the disciples are worried about finding bread for the day, but Jesus rebukes them, reminding them of the miracles he had performed in the past. When I recall what God has done for me in the past, it assures me that I can depend on God for today.

Today's Prayer
Dear Father God, when we become discouraged, remind us of your help in the past as we pray, “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen” (Matt. 6:9-13, KJV).
