Then Agrippa said to Paul, “Do you think that in such a short time you can persuade me to be a Christian?” - Acts 26:28 (NIV)

At a festival my booth was opposite a vendor who was having a rough day. He hadn’t slept well the night before and was discouraged about the slow sales. At the end of the day, I walked over and handed him a copy of a prayer for peace and trust in God attributed to St. Thérèse. I told him that praying those words before going to sleep helped me to be at peace.

He looked down at the paper, muttered a curse, and tore it to shreds saying, “I’m not Christian,” before stomping off. I was stunned. It takes a lot for me to gather courage and witness to others. His forceful rejection left me feeling discouraged and hurt.

On the drive home it occurred to me that despite years of telling people about Jesus and taking family and friends to church with me, I didn’t think I had ever been responsible for a new church member, never created a joyful Christian awakening in anyone’s heart, never brought anyone into the fold. What was I doing wrong?

Then a thought occurred to me. My part could be a small one, or it could be one of many. I may never know when someone will be persuaded to believe in Jesus. With the next nudge that man might be persuaded. I resolved not to be frustrated and to plant seeds of faith and then trust that someone else will come along and water them. I may never know the impact of my witness, but God will.
