Praying for Those in the Path of Fire and Storms

December 9, 2017 by Marti Williams-Martin

While fires rage throughout Southern California, forcing hundreds of thousands of people from their homes, we are yet again reminded that volunteers for The Upper Room Living Prayer Center are first responders. When there is a crisis or natural disaster, they respond.

If you are affected by the fires, or would like to request prayer for friends, family, neighbors, or strangers alike, call 800-251-2468 or visit the prayer center website. Volunteers will pray for your request by name and need.

Responding to the Storms

This fall, prayer center volunteers and covenant prayer groups responded to hundreds of calls and emails related to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Maria, and Nate.

A woman named Julianna in New Jersey prayed for Charlie in Florida. Diane in Canada requested prayer for the Simpsons. Joseph in South Carolina requested prayer for friends in Texas and Louisiana. Manda from Kansas prayed, “Lord, be with those affected by the hurricanes. Help them feel your arms around them.”

For those involved in this ministry, prayer is a meaningful act of compassion and care, not a passive thing done by those unwilling or unable to act. Gathering supplies, providing shelter and food, rescuing the stranded, and praying are all ways of carrying each other’s burdens as Paul instructed the Galatians to do. “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2, NIV).

Publisher Stephen Bryant compares people who pray for others to the four men who lowered a paralytic man through a roof to see Jesus (Mark 2). “When we pray for the needs of someone else, we carry that person into the healing presence of Jesus,” Bryant says. “In the midst of hurricanes, those in need are focused on rising water and dangerous wind. They need others to have faith for them.”

When people or storms get in the way, The Upper Room Living Prayer Center community brings those in need into the light and presence of God.
