A Pancake Recipe and Liturgy for Shrove Tuesday

February 15, 2021 by Rev. Kimberly C. Orr

As we prepare for the Lenten season, one of the traditional ways that many Christian communities celebrate Shrove Tuesday (or you may have heard it called Mardi Gras or “Fat Tuesday”) is to make pancakes, which are cooked in oil or fat, as a way of “fattening up” for the season of fasting that beings on Ash Wednesday.

So today I invite you to participate in some prayerful cooking live from my kitchen. Together, let us prepare to journey through the season of Lent using the pancake recipe and Shrove Tuesday liturgy available to download below.

Rev. Kimberly C. Orr serves as the publisher of The Upper Room.

As we prepare for Lent to begin, we invite you to join us for Walking in the Wilderness: An Online Lenten Retreat with The Upper Room. In this online course using Beth A. Richardson's book Walking in the Wilderness, we will hold sacred space for one another and connect with God throughout each day. Join us as we begin with an Ash Wednesday service from The Upper Room Chapel live on Facebook and YouTube, February 17, 2021 at 11:00 AM Central time.
