NASHVILLE, Tenn. August 24, 2022 / The Upper Room / The Academy for Spiritual Formation will resume its Two-Year Academy program on January 23, 2023. Academy #42 is the first Two-Year Academy offered since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Academy #42 will take place at Camp McDowell Retreat and Conference Center in Nauvoo, Alabama.
The Academy for Spiritual Formation creates transformative space for people to connect with God, self, others, and creation for the sake of the world. The Two-Year Academy is The Academy’s most comprehensive and impactful offering. Participants meet in the same location for five days, every three months, totaling 40 days in residence over the course of two years.
“In the face of a global pandemic, I am grateful [maybe proud] that we have continued to fulfill our mission by learning to create transformative space in online settings and developing new expressions of The Academy that have nurtured and empowered people during a time of tremendous upheaval. At the same time, there is a longing and need to be in a physical and spiritual community, so the future of The Academy is both online and in person. That’s why I’m so excited to resume our in-person Two-Year Academies and to see a new community forming for Academy #42. We have an outstanding leadership team and an incredible list of faculty who embody the wisdom and depth needed for these times. I look forward to witnessing the ways God works in and through the lives of those who join us,” said Johnny Sears, Director, Academy for Spiritual Formation.
Previous Two-Year participants describe The Academy as life-changing, restorative, and spiritually grounding—a necessary offering in an age of deep division and political posturing.

I join many of those who will pray for you as you seek to discern what you are called to be at this moment. May God grant you the courage to fulfill that calling. May we all open our eyes and see the misery, open our ears and hear the cries of God’s people, and, like God through the Lord Jesus Christ, be incarnate amongst them.”
