God of presence, help me recognize when my thoughts, distractions, and fears keep me from being fully present to you and to those around me. I surrender to you all my tasks, my thoughts, and my distractions. For you are my peace, and the peace of the world. Amen.
God, I surrender to you all my cluttered thoughts.
I took the picture at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina, a beautiful conference center near Asheville. The Upper Room offers a variety of opportunities to help people grow closer to God, such as the Academy for Spiritual Formation, The Walk to Emmaus, Face to Face, and Journey to the Table. What are the thoughts and distractions that clutter your heart and keep you from connecting with God?
I'm a big fan of Patricia Wilson. 1. She's a great writer in the area of practical spirituality; 2. She's from Victoria, British Columbia (I just think that's cool.); and 3. She's really funny. You'll have to check out her other books, including Why Pray When You Can Take Pills and Worry? With Quiet Spaces, you can learn to calm your mind and listen for God's still, small voice.
I join many of those who will pray for you as you seek to discern what you are called to be at this moment. May God grant you the courage to fulfill that calling. May we all open our eyes and see the misery, open our ears and hear the cries of God’s people, and, like God through the Lord Jesus Christ, be incarnate amongst them.”
