Let the Best Shine

April 26, 2020 by Agnes Wee (Singapore)

The COVID-19 outbreak that started in December 2019 has brought out the worst and best in human nature. On one hand, we read about selfish behavior of panic-buying and hoarding, scamming and unscrupulous opportunists turning others' fear into their money-making machine. On the other hand, we also see true sacrifices and dedication from some in our society who put others before themselves — even at the expense of their own safety and lives. The healthcare workers who put in long exhausting hours, racing against time to come up with test kits and vaccines for the virus and to care for infected patients. The private-hire drivers who volunteer to give rides to healthcare workers who were shunned by some ignorant people in the society. The security and contact tracing teams who worked tirelessly to screen people at customs and borders and helped trace those who might have come into close contact with those who were infected. And the cleaners who diligently stepped up the cleaning rituals to provide us a more hygienic and safe environment to live and work in. Many in the community also came forward to donate in cash or in kinds and even their time to make the lives of those affected by the COVID-19 crisis a little better. But what stood out for me was the overwhelming response to help the pregnant wife of a Bangladesh foreign worker who has been infected and is critically ill in the hospital. Donations of baby things like diapers, milk and milk bottles etc were collected and shipped to Bangladesh free-of-charge to the foreign worker's wife who was due to give birth soon. In the Bible, God says we are to care for the weak, the widows, orphans, and foreigners in our land. This incident and many others clearly demonstrate the love of God to the needy in our society. May we always be mindful to let the best of humanity shine even in the worst of a world pandemic crisis.

Prayer: Dear Father God, help us to focus on you during these difficult times when the whole world is suffering. Guide us to be a blessing to others especially those who feel helpless, hopeless, and abandoned.
