How Much Farther?

May 4, 2020 by Lea Anne Foster (Virginia, USA)

From the end of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

— Psalm 61:2

Social distancing and sheltering in place due to the coronavirus global pandemic feels like a modern-day version of the wilderness described in Matthew’s gospel. (See Matt. 4:1-4). We are tested. We are lonely. We are hungry for connection. Jesus understood these feelings so we can take our cues from him. His response while in the wilderness reminds us hold on to God’s word.

Our family takes annual road trips to visit grandparents and extended family. The common refrain, “How much farther?” echoes from the back seat during those drives. In a moment of enlightenment a few years ago when the question came, I responded, “We’re closer than we were.” On what seemed like a particularly long day in quarantine last week, I called to God from the backseat of my life in my most exasperated tone, “How much fa

rther?” I was desperate for God to tell me how much longer we’d be stuck at home, when we’d eradicate COVID-19, and at what point my kids would return to playdates and school. Matthew 4 refocused my attention on what gives my life deeper meaning: God's word. As I read my Bible and pray for my world and community, I experience God telling me that I’m getting closer than I was to being the Christian parent I want to be for my children.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for letting us know that we are not alone in this modern day wilderness. We have your word and we have each other. Give us patience and courage to face these uncertain days. We ask for your healing for those who suffer from the coronavirus and your protection for the medical professionals and first responders. Amen.
