September 6: Embracing Obstacles
1. When has a tough situation been an obstacle to the life you want to live? How did you handle the frustration caused by the situation? What did this experience teach you about the obstacles in life that we inevitably encounter?
2. Recall a time when God used something unlikely to change your attitude. What did God use? How did changing your attitude affect your situation?
3. Do you agree that sometimes what is most difficult is most important? What helps you to persevere through such difficulties? When has your perseverance been rewarded? How was it rewarded?
4. Have you ever felt that your faith was being tested? How did you seek God’s guidance during that time? In what ways did your faith change?
5. What scripture verses or spiritual practices help you find joy in your present situation? What helps you remain focused on God in all circumstances?

September 13: Honest with God

1. When you are experiencing a series of challenges, do you find it easy or difficult to remain joyful and honest with God? Why?
2. Why can it be difficult to feel happy for others when we are unhappy ourselves? What do you do when you feel angry at or envious of others?
3. Have there been times when your prayers were not honest and open? Why or why not? How does your relationship with God change when you are honest in your prayers?
4. What does it mean to you that God will refine your heart? What do you think a refined heart looks like?
5. How does the fact that God knows your heart even before you speak encourage you? How does this knowledge change the way you communicate with God?

September 20: The Light of Life

1. Recall a time when God’s word enlightened your path. How did scripture change your mindset or experience? Is that passage still special to you?
2. When have you lost your joy because of something that was going on in your life? Why can it be so difficult to hold on to joy in hard times? Where do you find joy in life’s challenging moments?
3. How does God speak to you through scripture? In what ways does scripture help you during trying times? How do you respond when a scripture passage speaks to you?
4. When have you most recently called upon the Lord? How did God show up for you? How does scripture help you turn to God and hear God’s voice?
5. How do you return to good fellowship with someone who has hurt you? What stories from scripture remind you of the importance of making peace with others?

September 27: More than We Can Chew

1. Has the phrase “You’ve bitten off more than you can chew” ever applied to you? Why is it so easy to take on more than we can handle? What do you do when you’re feeling overcommitted?
2. Do you find it difficult to be still when you are under pressure? Why or why not? In what ways do you make time to seek God and find peace even when you are overwhelmed?
3. Why is it often our instinct to hold on to commitments, even when we have too much on our plate? How do you seek help and support when you have made commitments that you need to let go of?
4. How often do other responsibilities encroach on the time you spend with God? What spiritual practices help you to stay mindful of the necessity of spending time with God each day?
5. When and where are you most able to cast your cares on God? Who or what most encourages you to be still and seek God’s wisdom no matter how busy you are?
