Ears to Hear: A Litany for Listening One to the Other
I am a person of strong conviction and intense moral righteousness. I have a lot of… Read More

Since writing my devotional, my precious pup, Max, has passed away. I’d hoped we could celebrate its publication together with a pup cup for him and a lavender matcha latte with oat milk for me. As a senior Shih Tzu, though, I knew every day with him was a gift and that he might not be here when the devotional came out. Max passed away in February of this year. I was blessed to have him as my pet companion for seven fun-filled years! He truly was, as the saying goes, my “road dog.”
Who knew God would use an ordinary Saturday of cleaning to speak to my heart through my sweet dog? As I cleaned, I placed a stack of books beside the stairs to carry upstairs later. A few minutes afterward, I walked upstairs without them and soon heard Max barking frantically below. He was distressed by what he perceived as an insurmountable obstacle to climbing the stairs. That moment became the inspiration for my devotional.
Since writing it, I’ve reflected more on how God uses ordinary moments and everyday tasks to draw our attention toward God. I think about Martha, who was busy preparing for Jesus while her sister, Mary, sat at his feet and listened (Luke 10:38–42). If I am honest, I often find myself more like Martha than Mary, focused on the tasks that need to be done. I need the reminder of Jesus’ words to Martha: “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better” (Luke 10:41–42, NIV). That Saturday, God reminded me to prioritize time with God

Each summer, the women of my church’s women’s ministry journey through a devotion together. This summer, the leader of the ministry selected a study about daily practices to nurture the whole self. Through that, I gained a deeper understanding of caring for our bodies, minds, and souls.
I discovered how daily rhythms can help us prioritize our relationship with God. Setting boundaries around social media, for example, has helped me get seven to eight hours of sleep each night. I’ve also learned that meditating on God’s word need not be limited to designated quiet time. I can reflect on scripture while walking, washing dishes, or folding laundry.
I am learning that self-care does not always require grand gestures. Setting healthy boundaries, decluttering our homes, preparing meals, and spending time in nature can help us make room for God. When we prioritize our relationship with God, we become more attentive to God’s presence in ordinary moments.
I am thankful that God used an ordinary Saturday with Max to remind me to seek Him first. What began as a simple moment continues to teach me to seek God first, one day and one ordinary moment at a time.
Has God ever used an ordinary moment in your day to remind you of God’s presence? I’d love for you to share your experience in the comments!
