My devotion grew out of a real encounter I witnessed while shopping at a local store. I was so touched by the experience of seeing true generosity in action when the man behind me paid for the extra groceries for the man who had just become homeless—and my own humbleness in missing an opportunity to show God’s love—that I wrote about it on Facebook. Many of my friends commented that they were also touched by what I had shared. I decided that others might also benefit from learning from my experience. So even though this was not my best moment, I swallowed my pride and focused on helping others learn from my mistake in missing an opportunity to serve.
I have often reflected on this encounter. I think that it has made me more patient and observant. When I start to feel impatient in a store now, I quiet my impatient thoughts and put my eyes on the people around me. I think about what might be going on for them. Just this simple refocus from myself to others has allowed me to become more patient and caring.
