The Pitfalls of the Misconception of Time

August 18, 2018 by Adedeji Adewunmi (Lagos, Nigeria)

Time means something different to every person. For example, an elderly man has different understanding of time than a boy in his early teens. Your nine a.m. on Monday morning is different from your neighbor’s timing. One of the difficulties with time in this world is that time cannot be retained. Time flies away and changes moments and seasons; it affects everything around us. We grow older every day, and we move closer to our graves and to eternity. Our body grows into different shapes and sizes when we are young, but later it begins to deteriorate. Our time should not be compared with another’s, because time is not the same with all of us.

Marriage is a very wonderful thing; it brings the timings of two people together and makes them one. However, sometimes issues appear in marriage because two different people with different timings have merged their lives together. We need to understand that our time is different, and we cannot expect our timing to perfectly align with another. The reason why our timing is different is because we each have different agendas to pursue in this world. We all have different goals and purposes we want to achieve. Our timing will never be the same as another’s, including the person we share the same roof with every day.

The time we spend on what is not profitable to our purpose can ruin us. We tend to spend our lives studying someone else’s life, even when our time is ticking. A lot of people get depressed because they spend their life thinking about what they should become and what others have become. One day we will close our eyes, and our time on earth will end. What we have done with our time will speak for us. We should focus on our own time, and work according to our seasons and moments. Let your timing be what defines your purpose and your relationships.
