Matthew 14:22-33

In you, Lord, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in your righteousness. Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me. - Psalm 31:1-2 (NIV)

My family used to take day trips to a beach in Rhode Island during summer break. It was a great beach with perfect waves for body surfing. One day, the waves were much higher and stronger than usual, and a huge wave crashed right over my head, submerging me. Each time I came up for air, another wave came down right on my head. After five of these waves in succession, unable to make progress toward shore, I panicked. Seeing my brother nearby, I yelled for help. He swiftly stretched out his arm to me, and I was safe.

This experience reminded me of the story in today’s reading from Matthew. As the disciples’ boat was tossed about by waves, Jesus walked toward them on the water. Peter, who wanted to show his faith, began to walk on the water toward Jesus. When Peter saw how strong the wind was, he began to sink and cried out for help. Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and they got into the boat. Jesus, the miracle worker, is always right beside us with an outstretched hand.
