Philippians 4:10-20

Paul wrote, “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” - Philippians 4:12 (NIV)

In 2020, my father suffered a massive pulmonary embolism and went into cardiac arrest for nearly eight minutes. He became unable to sit, stand, or move. My father, a once-vibrant man who ran marathons and traveled, is now dependent on others to feed and dress him and move him to make him more comfortable.

Throughout his journey, my family and I have prayed continuously for my father to be healed completely, but still we wait. Some days the situation feels unbearable to me. Yet my father has never become bitter or resentful in waiting on the Lord. His attitude is one of peace.

My father frequently expresses how blessed and lucky he feels to be alive and to spend time with his family. He chooses to continue praying and drawing strength from his faith and family. He is content.

I have learned that when we do not understand God’s plan, and even when our prayers seem to go unanswered, we can draw peace and contentedness from the knowledge of God’s faithfulness.

Dear Lord, grant us the strength to find peace, contentedness, and even joy in our circumstances, no matter how difficult they may be. Amen.
