The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. - Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
On November 8, 2024, our family’s world was shattered when my husband’s uncle Ron ended his life.
As someone who has battled mental illness myself, Ron’s death hit me especially hard. I know all too well how isolating and consuming those struggles can feel. His pain mirrored my own at times, and the thought of him enduring it alone was devastating. The grief brought waves of questions: Why didn’t we see his pain? Could we have done something to help?
As we began to sort through Ron’s belongings, the weight of his loss felt unbearable. Yet, even in those dark moments, God’s presence began to shine through. Family members leaned on each other for support, friends showed up with meals and prayers, and
Lamentations 3:22-23 provided a much-needed anchor for my heart, reminding me that even in the deepest grief, God’s love is constant and God’s mercy renews us day by day.
Grieving Ron’s passing has been a difficult journey, but it has also been a reminder of God’s healing power. Though the pain of loss and the struggles of mental illness can feel overwhelming, God never abandons us. God is close to the brokenhearted, offering light in our darkest moments and the promise of new mercies every day.
