Lectionary Week
June 10 16, 2024
Scripture Overview

The readings for this week look at the interaction between our humanity and divine kingdom power and the everyday anointing that can take place when we overlap with God’s presence. The scripture passage from First Samuel tells the story of Samuel following the guidance of the Lord to anoint David as king. Then we have Psalm 20, a psalm of David, that was originally written as a prayer sung by ancient Israelites for their king. Our passage from the Gospel of Mark compares the kingdom of God to the sprouting and growth of seeds in order to expound on the beauty of small acts of faith. In Second Corinthians, Paul explores what it means to glorify God. Paul also encourages the reader that when we are in Jesus Christ, we are made new.

Questions and Suggestions for Reflection

Read 1 Samuel 15:34–16:13. How do you feel God’s presence and anointing in your life?
Read Psalm 20. What are the desires of your heart? Where do the desires of your heart overlap with God’s desires for you? When do you feel as though you embody God’s desires?
Read 2 Corinthians 5:6-17. How can we make space for God in our physical body? Do you feel at home in your body while glorifying the Lord? When do you feel made new in Christ?
Read Mark 4:26-34. In what small action is God beckoning you to have big faith? How is God inviting you into kingdom work through small steps of faith?

Respond by posting a prayer .

Psalm 20:1-9

1 I pray that the LORD answers you whenever you are in trouble. Let the name of Jacob’s God protect you. 2 Let God send help to you from the sanctuary and support you from Zion. 3 Let God recall your many grain offerings; let him savor your entirely burned offerings. Selah 4 Let God grant what is in your heart and fulfill all your plans. 5 Then we will rejoice that you’ve been helped. We will fly our flags in the name of our God. Let the LORD fulfill all your requests! 6 Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed one; God answers his anointed one from his heavenly sanctuary, answering with mighty acts of salvation achieved by his strong hand. 7 Some people trust in chariots, others in horses; but we praise the LORD’s name. 8 They will collapse and fall, but we will stand up straight and strong. 9 LORD, save the king! Let him answer us when we cry out!

The twentieth psalm stands out from the ones leading up to it. This psalm is written to be sung on behalf of the king in preparation for battle. It makes the psalm come alive to me to think of it as this back-and-forth between a group of people and their...

God, you are longing to join with us in cultivating love and healing on earth. May we courageously move forward in union with you, aligning ourselves with love. May we surrender our actions to the ever-moving undercurrent of love. Amen.
