Lectionary Week
January 13–19, 2025
Scripture Overview

The Epiphany theme of God-with-us in the chaos of the world is present throughout the texts this week. In Isaiah, the postexilic Judean community returns to its home and cries out to a faithful God for full restoration of Jerusalem. Psalm 36 looks to God’s steadfast love that surrounds all that is, even in the face of oppression. The apostle Paul writes to a community whose chaos is internal, reminding them of God’s abundant love expressed in a beautiful diversity. This diversity ought to inspire celebration rather than division. In John’s Gospel, we see a miracle that points to the inbreaking of God’s joyful kingdom on earth.

Questions and Suggestions for Reflection

• Read Isaiah 62:1-5. Where are you experiencing the call not to remain silent in the face of injustice?
• Read Psalm 36:5-10. How are you experiencing God’s steadfast love in your life?
• Read 1 Corinthians 12:1-11. What spiritual gifts have you identified in yourself? How might you celebrate the gifts of others around you?
• Read John 2:1-11. How can you bear witness to God’s excessive love?

Respond by posting a prayer .

Isaiah 62:1-5

1 For Zion’s sake I won’t keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I won’t sit still until her righteousness shines out like a light, and her salvation blazes like a torch. 2 Nations will see your righteousness, all kings your glory. You will be called by a new name, which the LORD’s own mouth will determine. 3 You will be a splendid garland in the LORD’s hand, a royal turban in the palm of God’s hand. 4 You will no longer be called Abandoned, and your land will no longer be called Deserted. Instead, you will be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land, Married. Because the LORD delights in you, your land will be cared for once again. 5 As a young man marries a young woman, so your sons will marry you. With the joy of a bridegroom because of his bride, so your God will rejoice because of you.

These verses from Isaiah were written in the context of a postexilic Judean community that had returned to Jerusalem. Those who returned home arrived at a place marked by desolation and abandonment. The disaster that they came home to was one more blow to a people who had experienced unrelenting...

O God, I lift up my voice and will not keep silent. May I look to your light of love, choose hope, and chase after your justice. Amen.
