Lectionary Week
January 27–February 2, 2025
Scripture Overview

Throughout scripture, God’s covenant love for humankind is consistently affirmed. In First Corinthians, Paul proclaims that love never ends. The additional readings this week provide assurances of God’s eternal love. In love, God calls and sends Jeremiah to bring God’s word to God’s people. The psalmist assures us of God’s care for us from birth, a constant rock and refuge, our hope and our trust. Luke records the words of Jesus in the Nazareth synagogue that proclaim the wideness of God’s mercy and love for all people. God continues to call us to remember that love never ends.

Questions and Suggestions for Reflection

• Read Jeremiah 1:4-10. How is God calling you to be a part of God’s work in the world?
• Read Psalm 71:1-6. In what ways have you experienced God as a refuge?
• Read 1 Corinthians 13:1-13. How do you use the gifts God gives you in the service of love?
• Read Luke 4:21-30. How do you keep your heart and mind open to hear and act on new revelations of God’s love for the world?

Respond by posting a prayer .

Psalm 71:1-6

1 I’ve taken refuge in you, LORD. Don’t let me ever be put to shame! 2 Deliver me and rescue me by your righteousness! Bend your ear toward me and save me! 3 Be my rock of refuge where I can always escape. You commanded that my life be saved because you are my rock and my fortress. 4 My God, rescue me from the power of the wicked; rescue me from the grip of the wrongdoer and the oppressor 5 because you are my hope, Lord. You, LORD, are the one I’ve trusted since childhood. 6 I’ve depended on you from birth you cut the cord when I came from my mother’s womb. My praise is always about you.

“My praise is continually of you.” The psalmist, speaking from the vantage point of older age (vv. 17-18) affirms that praise is our proper response to God’s eternal love and faithfulness. One of the blessings of aging is the ability to look back and see where and how God has...

Steadfast God, we praise you for your constant faithfulness. May our praise for you continually be in our mouths and on our hearts. Amen.
