Lectionary Week
July 20–26, 2026
Scripture Overview

The apostle Paul’s question, “What then are we to say about these things?” shapes our theme for this week’s scripture lessons as we read of things that are hard to comprehend. In Genesis, we wonder what to say about deception and the giving and taking of women. In the psalm, as we wonder what to say about God’s covenantal promises, we are called to respond with thanks and praise. In Matthew, we wonder what to say about Jesus’ parables used to explain what the kingdom of heaven is like. In Romans, as we wonder about what to say in the midst of our groanings and grief, Paul reassures us of the power of the Spirit’s intercessions and the promise of God’s abiding and eternal presence.

Questions and Suggestions for Reflection

Read Genesis 29:15-28. When have you deceived someone? When have you been deceived by someone? In the messiness of life, where have you found God?
Read Psalm 105:1-11, 45b. Recall some of the wonderful works God has done. What does God’s covenant mean to you? How do you respond?
Read Romans 8:26-39. When have you not known what to say—to a person, in a troubling situation, in prayer? What things made you feel separated or close to God?
Read Matthew 13:31-33, 44-52. Which of Jesus’ parables do you relate to? How would you describe the kingdom of heaven in contemporary language?

Respond by posting a prayer.

Matthew 13:44-52

44 “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure that somebody hid in a field, which someone else found and covered up. Full of joy, the finder sold everything and bought that field. 45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls. 46 When he found one very precious pearl, he went and sold all that he owned and bought it. 47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that people threw into the lake and gathered all kinds of fish. 48 When it was full, they pulled it to the shore, where they sat down and put the good fish together into containers. But the bad fish they threw away. 49 That’s the way it will be at the end of the present age. The angels will go out and separate the evil people from the righteous people, 50 and will throw the evil ones into a burning furnace. People there will be weeping and grinding their teeth. 51 “Have you understood all these things?” Jesus asked. They said to him, “Yes.” 52 Then he said to them, “Therefore, every legal expert who has been trained as a disciple for the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings old and new things out of their treasure chest.”

Parables are stories Jesus told to illuminate his teachings. But just as we struggle to understand their meaning today, Jesus’ disciples sometimes needed help too. “Explain to us the parable,” they say in verse 36.
Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field,...

Jesus, I wonder what to say about your teachings. Inspire me to act in response, shaping my life in the way you taught. Amen.
