Scripture Overview

Joseph has risen to a high position in Egypt, and now his brothers come searching for food in a time of famine. He reveals his true identity and reinterprets their evil intentions as being part of God’s plan. Sometimes we too are granted perspective to see God’s working in difficult times. The psalmist rejoices when God’s people are living in unity. Paul declares that his people are not rejected by the merciful God, for God’s promises are unchanging. In Matthew, Jesus teaches that God looks on the inside, not the outside. Thus, what you take into your body is less important than what comes from your heart.

Questions and Suggestions for Reflection

Read Genesis 45:1-15. When have you struggled to forgive someone? When have you needed forgiveness? How does recognizing your own need for forgiveness help you to be more compassionate toward others?
Read Psalm 133. What does it mean to “live together in unity”? What actions can you take to live in unity with those around you, even those with whom you disagree?
Read Romans 11:1-2a, 29-32. How does the idea of God’s “irrevocable gifts” affect your understanding of grace and salvation? What gifts and callings from God might you need to rediscover or embrace in this season of your life?
Read Matthew 15:10-28. How does the Canaanite woman’s faith inspire you to persist in seeking God’s help, even when it seems delayed or denied?

Respond by posting a prayer.

Romans 11:1-2, 29-32

1 So I ask you, has God rejected his people? Absolutely not! I’m an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God hasn’t rejected his people, whom he knew in advance. Or don’t you know what the scripture says in the case of Elijah, when he pleads with God against Israel? 29 God’s gifts and calling can’t be taken back. 30 Once you were disobedient to God, but now you have mercy because they were disobedient. 31 In the same way, they have also been disobedient because of the mercy that you received, so now they can receive mercy too. 32 God has locked up all people in disobedience, in order to have mercy on all of them.

In Romans 11, Paul reassures the early church that God has not rejected the people of Israel, despite their disobedience. The gifts and calling of God, Paul emphasizes, are irrevocable. God does not abandon God’s promises. Whether we have been faithful or faltered, God’s faithfulness remains constant.

God of grace, thank you for your faithfulness, even when I am unfaithful. Help me to trust in your promises. Renew in me a sense of purpose and calling as I follow you. Amen.
