Lectionary Week
October 12–18, 2026
Scripture Overview

As Christians, we know we believe in Immanuel—God with us. We cling to this idea in theory, but in the everyday messiness of life, we sometimes still wonder where God actually is. This week’s readings offer various perspectives on God’s presence. In Exodus, Moses feels insecure about the calling on his life and asks to see God. The psalmist remembers the story of God’s presence with the Israelites in the wilderness. The Gospel reminds us that even when we ponder momentous decisions about weighty topics, our ultimate security is in our belonging to God. And Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians gives us an example of experiencing God’s love in everyday friendship.

Questions and Suggestions for Reflection

Read Exodus 33:12-23. When have you struggled to believe that God is with you? How did you find a sign of God’s presence?
Read Psalm 99. How has God heard your cry? How can you listen with God for the cries of others?
Read 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10. When does your faith call you to live in a counter-cultural way? How do you show the world how to live?
Read Matthew 22:15-22. You belong to God. How do you experience God’s call on your life?

Respond by posting a prayer.

Psalm 99:1-9

1 The LORD rules the nations shake! He sits enthroned on the winged heavenly creatures the earth quakes! 2 The LORD is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the nations. 3 Let them thank your great and awesome name. He is holy! 4 Strong king who loves justice, you are the one who established what is fair. You worked justice and righteousness in Jacob. 5 Magnify the LORD, our God! Bow low at his footstool! He is holy! 6 Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel too among those who called on his name. They cried out to the LORD, and he himself answered them 7 he spoke to them from a pillar of cloud. They kept the laws and the rules God gave to them. 8 LORD our God, you answered them. To them you were a God who forgives but also the one who avenged their wrong deeds. 9 Magnify the LORD our God! Bow low at his holy mountain because the LORD our God is holy!

I live right at the bottom of a mountain. As I go through my days, I regularly come face-to-face with my own smallness, and I’m reminded of the beauty and majesty of God’s creation. A painted sunset, a tree, even a moth or a single leaf can do the same....

Lord, I praise your great and awesome name! And I rejoice that when I call your name, you answer me. Amen.
