Lectionary Week
October 19–25, 2026
Scripture Overview

In the passages for this week, we observe different perspectives on how to understand the image of God within the dynamics of communities. Deuteronomy emphasizes a figure of promise for the social development of a nation. The psalmist reminds us of God’s care for the people throughout history. The letter to the Thessalonians presents us with the purpose of being part of and building a community. And Matthew’s Gospel gives us essential foundations and guidelines that we must uphold in our own contexts and social world. Through these readings we are able to reflect on our roles and functions in the communities to which we belong.

Questions and Suggestions for Reflection

Read Deuteronomy 34:1-12. How does God inspire and challenge you to keep going despite the adversities of life?
Read Psalm 90:1-6, 13-17. How can you become the image of God who is a refuge for the afflicted, the oppressed, and the brokenhearted?
Read 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8. How can you contribute to God’s work in our communities? How do you create spaces for listening, accompaniment, and fraternity?
Read Matthew 22:34-46. How do you embody love for God and neighbor? What actions are necessary today to generate examples that reflect that love?

Respond by posting a prayer.

Psalm 90:1-6, 13-17

1 Lord, you have been our help, generation after generation. 2 Before the mountains were born, before you birthed the earth and the inhabited world from forever in the past to forever in the future, you are God. 3 You return people to dust, saying, “Go back, humans,” 4 because in your perspective a thousand years are like yesterday past, like a short period during the night watch. 5 You sweep humans away like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning. 6 True, in the morning it thrives, renewed, but come evening it withers, all dried up. 13 Come back to us, LORD! Please, quick! Have some compassion for your servants! 14 Fill us full every morning with your faithful love so we can rejoice and celebrate our whole life long. 15 Make us happy for the same amount of time that you afflicted us for the same number of years that we saw only trouble. 16 Let your acts be seen by your servants; let your glory be seen by their children. 17 Let the kindness of the Lord our God be over us. Make the work of our hands last. Make the work of our hands last!

For a number of years I have worked in refugee and migration programs, coordinating initiatives for people who are forced to leave their countries of origin because their lives are in danger as a result of humanitarian crises. It is impressive to see persons in these situations carry a belief...

God, confirm in us the declaration of the psalmist to continue advancing and walking in life, with the conviction that you are a refuge for us in moments of insecurity and difficulties. Amen.
