A Companion on Your Spiritual Journey

January 15, 2023 by The staff of The Upper Room

The Upper Room is a global ministry dedicated to supporting the spiritual life of Christians seeking to know and experience God more fully. From its beginnings in 1935 as a daily devotional guide, The Upper Room has grown to include publications, programs, prayer support, eCourses, and other resources to help believers of all ages and denominations move to a deeper level of faith and service. The persistent and profound work of spiritual formation continues with new vitality at The Upper Room as we invite people to create daily life with God.

The apostles returned to Jesus and told him everything they had done and taught. . . .
He said to the apostles, “Come by yourselves to a secluded place and rest for a while.”

—Mark 6:30–31 (CEB)

The Upper Room desires to walk alongside spiritual leaders—lay and clergypersons, seeking and growing, doubting and certain, United Methodist and ecumenical siblings, queer and straight, black, white, indigenous, and all people of color—as they gather around Jesus and speak honestly about all they have done and taught, about their joy and their grief.

Around the globe, individuals face economic hardship, black and brown siblings feel the violence of white supremacy and colonialism, COVID-19 and cancer continue to claim the lives of loved ones, our hurting earth churns with wildfires and floods, queer folks and poor folks fight for visibility and justice, young people long for something compelling and challenging enough to keep their attention and ignite their passion. And, as people of faith, we need ways to connect to spiritual practices—ancient and modern—that allow us to step apart and rest a while. We need ways to connect to the ultimate source of strength and sustenance—to a God who is present and active in the midst of it all.

The Upper Room seeks not to prescribe what a daily life with God looks like but to journey with people as they walk their individual paths with God. We do not hold any illusion that we can transform people. Rather, we strive to create space and offer spiritual and embodied practice that encourages folks to rest, to abide, and to listen for the ways that God may transform them.
