The Beautiful Dissonance of the Bible
“You have heard it said. . . . But I say. . . .” So Jesus Read More
As I have said in my devotions, I am old. As I age my parts don’t work as well as they used to, but I am still fascinated by how fine God made our bodies. I am fearfully and wonderfully made (see Ps. 139:14).
I was thinking about this as I was sitting in my recliner, reaching for a coffee cup. My career was as an engineer, so as I watched myself reach out my arm, find the cup, lace my fingers through the handle, and bring the cup to my lips, I thought about how complicated that simple maneuver really was. I didn’t have to type in a password, move a mouse or even say, “Hey Google,” I just did it—while still reading my devotion. As an engineer I realized how complex those motions were. If my fingers missed the handle, they automatically moved until they found it.
God has made every part of our bodies in this miraculous fashion. I won’t even talk about how much coordination it takes to play almost any musical instrument. I am always amazed when I watch our church orchestra make beautiful music out of pipes, strings, and pieces of wood. I failed to learn how to play a Hawaiian steel guitar, so to me the ability to play instruments is miraculous and one of the great gifts God gives to people.
If you ever wonder how marvelous God really is, pay attention to some task you are doing and notice how complex each movement is. It will make you appreciate God’s love for us even more.
