The Power of Community

Growing up in Los Angeles County in southern California, I have experienced many earthquakes. Some of them have been mere “shivers” of the earth, mild tremors that rattle the dishes in the cupboard then are gone. Others are more serious and damaging, of course, but thankfully most are not.
The earthquake in Mexico City that caused the train delay on the subway in today’s devotion was, thankfully, one of the milder sorts. The electricity came back on, and we continued safely on our way. Even though the moment the lights went out and we were plunged into deep darkness was very scary, I can look back now and recognize that I was safe all along.
It is the same with past trials. When I look back, I see the many ways the Lord has guided and protected me over the years. Just like earthquakes, some trials are big and some are small—we never know from outset which it will be. God knows, however, and we can have comfort and encouragement by relying on God and God’s word. And God’s community.
I’d like to say a brief word about community. We need our fellow Christians, and they need us. It’s important for our spiritual growth and development to connect with other Christ-followers; it’s one of the reasons Jesus established the Church. Just as Julia reached out and held my hand in the darkness of that disabled subway train, other Christians can uphold, pray for, and support us when we face the uncertainties of life. We were not meant to be alone. I encourage you to find your church, get involved, build your community, so that you can be that “hand in the darkness” to someone else. Hugs!
